Upcoming VPFA Study Days: April and June 2024

Following two fantastic study days in the autumn of 2023 (‘Notes from the Nile’ in September and ‘OUIDA: High Priestess of the Impossible’ in November), VPFA is delighted to be supporting two study days taking place over the coming months, in April and June. (See our Previous Study Day pages for more details of the ‘Nile’ and ‘Ouida’ events.)

19 April 2024 @ MMU: 'Knowledge in the Victorian Periodical'

This study day brings together scholars working on periodicals and popular fiction to ask fundamental questions about how periodicals and their fictions constructed, shaped, disseminated, complicated, and otherwise were involved with “knowledge”. This will be an in-person study day at Manchester Metropolitan University, with hybrid options for audience members.

Abstracts are still being accepted at the time of writing: the deadline is Friday 15 March 2024. See the CFP on our ‘Forthcoming Study Days’ page for more details (LINK).

8-9 June 2024, ONLINE: ‘Silenced Voices and Erased Agencies in Victorian Life and Victorian Popular Fiction’

‘Silenced Voices and Erased Agencies in Victorian Life and Victorian Popular Fiction’ will be taking place online across two days in June. This study day wishes to contribute to the robust conversations regarding voice, silence, and agency that are very much relevant today. It is the hope of the hosts that participants will leave with a better understanding of the institutions and mechanisms that worked in tandem to regulate and control marginalised voices and agencies in the Victorian era.

The deadline to submit an abstract has passed, but keep an eye on the X/Twitter page for registration and programme details: @SilenceVPFA. Alternatively, email Rebecca Hamilton (r.hamilton1.21@abdn.ac.uk) with any queries. See the CFP on our ‘Forthcoming Study Days’ page for more details (LINK).

Many thanks to all of our study day organisers!
